Workshop
Rozelle Bay site is a construction & heavy maintenance site & full caution is required.
- Hard hats must be worn to protect the wearer from falls, bumping into protruding objects and falling objects.
- Closed toe shoes — trip hazards are everywhere; metal swarf and wood splinters are hazards that require suitable footwear.
- Toxic chemicals, flammable liquids & paint constitute chemical hazards. These items are stored in defined appropriate storage facilities.
- Look where you are walking. To look at something, stop, look, then move on when you can look to where you are walking. Do not step backwards — there may be trip hazards there.
The workshop has different trade locations — the shipwrights’ area, the welding section, metal fabrication and the metal machine shop with its CNC mill.
The story
The workshop’s trade locations:
- Shipwrights’ area.
- Welding section.
- Metal fabrication — plate drilling, welding, plate bending.
- Metal machine shop — CNC mill.
Approximately 20 – 40 volunteers work in the workshop at Rozelle Bay.
The crane is owned by SHF and is very useful to move heavy items of equipment.
SHF has 400 volunteers, yet we need more volunteers.

Volunteers across the fleet
The 400 volunteers vary from time to time and are spread across the fleet, including:
- 1874 sailing ship — approx. 60 – 80 volunteers.
- John Oxley, 1927 coastal steamship — currently under restoration (finish 2027) — 20 – 45 volunteers.
- Waratah, 1902 coastal steam tug — operational — approx. 20 – 35 volunteers.
- 2 ex-Navy tugs — operational — approx. 18 – 30 volunteers.
- Lady Hopetoun, 1902 45 tonne steam launch — operational — approx. 20 – 40 volunteers.
- Kanangra, 1912 inner harbour ferry — under restoration — approx. 20 – 35 volunteers.
- Small vessels (Harman, Berrima, Protex) — operational — approx. 20 – 35 volunteers.
- Model makers at Wharf 7 — approx. 5 – 10 volunteers.
- MRRC at Wharf 7, working in conjunction with the ANMM — approx. 10 – 15 volunteers.
- Workshop at Rozelle Bay — approx. 20 – 40 volunteers.
- Small boats / heritage engines — approx. 10 – 20 volunteers.
Heritage engines
We have over 70 heritage engines in the collection, of varying condition from wrecks to good display condition. The engines are located at several sites including Wharf 7, Rozelle Bay and CSMM at Menangle.
